BUTTERFLY COUNTING PUZZLES
Why not set up an invitation to play using these ‘Butterfly Counting Puzzles’?
Select those appropriate for your children (1-10 available) and allow them to match the number with the corresponding number of butterflies. Each pair has a different way of connecting as a puzzle for the children to match and so even if they haven’t learnt what the number looks like yet, but are beginning to say the numbers in order, this can be a fun way to introduce them to new challenges.
Once the puzzles are complete, why not line the numbers up in order and count together? If your children would enjoy a further challenge, leave out a number and see if they can spot which one is missing from the sequence.
Puzzles could also be used as a fine motor control/counting activity if left uncut. Children could be given an appropriate number for their learning and encouraged to place objects on the butterflies, counting as they go.

Encourage your children to colour the objects and count them as they go (1 to 20). Ideal sheets to practise 1:1 correspondence counting (where children place their fingers on the objects as they count them). In addition, each number is also written as a word. For our youngest children, this adds to learning about text in the environment and how it has meaning. Our oldest children may start to recognise the words and associate them with the numbers. This will be beneficial for when they begin to read and write these words in subsequent years as they will have something to build on.

Why not select the boards appropriate for your child’s learning and invite them to match the magnifying glass with the correct number of butterflies? As an alternative, if laminated, the butterfly sheets also provide a great space for children to practise writing their numbers.

MINIBEASTS PICTOGRAM CHART
Minibeasts Pictogram Chart pictures designed for children to not only think about their favourite minibeast, but also realise that others may not have the same favourite. In addition, children begin to learn about simple graphs and charts.
Ideal for use in a classroom, preschool, nursery or childminder setting. Children do not have to necessarily complete the activity at the same time, but a chart can be added to a display and individual children can add their own favourites at appropriate times. Simply place the four large minibeasts on the first page in a horizontal line to form the base of the chart and children can add their own favourite smaller minibeast above to create the vertical lines of a chart. The lengths of the lines can be compared and number of minibeasts on each can be counted to find totals. Questions such as ‘How many children like the bee?’ may be asked. To really extend mathematical thinking, questions such as ‘How many more children like the bee than the butterfly?’ could be delved into.

MINIBEASTS DOUBLING ACTIVITY MATS
These cards can be used as they are with pencil/crayons & loose parts or laminated for use with playdough or whiteboard pens. Easy to use, these doubling mats provide a clear representation of the concept of doubling. Simply choose a number appropriate for your child’s level in the top box (e.g. 3), then in this example place 3 loose part objects/playdough spots, pencil/pen marks on one wing and the same on the other. Encourage your child to count the spots using 1:1 correspondence counting and then write the answer 6 in the final box. This shows that double 3 is equal to 6.

MINIBEAST ACTIVITY/MOVEMENT CHALLENGE CARDS
Have great fun with your children whilst all pretending to be minibeasts with this set of 8 Minibeast Activity Challenge cards.
Perhaps children could stand in a circle around the pile of cards and take turns to pick one for everyone to do. Cards could equally be shrunk down and placed on a key ring to take out on adventures or featured on an indoor or outdoor display board and referred to with everyone carrying out the activity on floor space in front. Once the children get to know the cards they will be able to relate the action to the picture without necessarily needing the card read to them...For example an adult may be able to simply hold up a card and everyone will be able to do the activity together! For those children who are exceptionally engaged, these cards explored in sequence could even be set to music as a dance performance!
Great for physical development, descriptive language, understanding the world and turn taking.

Intended to be cut out (and ideally laminated) for use by children in repeatable size ordering activities. If you have access to a fuzzy felt board, why not stick velcro tabs on the back so that children can move them around on the board? MINIBEASTS TALLY CHART
Minibeast themed tally chart. Your children will love to use this as part of an out and about hunt activity (for example searching for minibeasts in your outdoor area) or in conjunction with a 'Minibeasts' themed tuff spot or feely bag. Use as a Tally Chart or Check List. Differentiate expectations for individual children within your care. Some children may simply use it as a visual cue whilst others may begin to make marks resembling tally lines or even numbers. Alternatively ask your children ‘Which is your favourite minibeast?’ and collect the results as a group. Which minibeast has the most votes? Perhaps use in conjunction with our ‘Minibeast Pictogram Chart Activity’.
