‘Emotion’ resources in ‘All About Me’ and ‘Mental Health’

A key part of safeguarding mental health is understanding, identifying and dealing with emotions. We can help children to identify their emotions by naming feelings whilst they are having them, taking part in activities such as our ‘Emotion of the Day’, talking about what an emotion looks like when we experience it and what feelings we experience in response to certain situations, stories, art, etc. A large part of dealing with negative emotions is understanding that they will pass and exploring things that we can all do to help them pass more quickly. We have some great new ‘Mood Booster’ resources which we hope will help with this!

Smile Power Day

Smile Power Day is celebrated annually on 15th June and is recognised in the UK as well as internationally. The day emphasises the positive impact of smiling on personal well-being and social connections.

What Is Smile Power Day?

Smile Power Day encourages individuals to harness the power of a smile to uplift themselves and those around them. Smiling has been shown to release endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin—neurotransmitters that promote feelings of happiness and reduce stress.

Observance in the UK

In the UK, Smile Power Day aligns with National Smile Month, which runs from 15th May to 15th June. Organised by the Oral Health Foundation, National Smile Month is the UK's largest oral health campaign, aiming to raise awareness about the importance of good oral hygiene and its impact on overall health.

Ways to Celebrate

  • Share a Smile: Make a conscious effort to smile at friends, family, colleagues, and even strangers.

  • Self-Reflection: Smile at yourself in the mirror to boost self-confidence and mood.

  • Acts of Kindness: Engage in activities that bring joy to others, such as volunteering or writing positive notes.

  • Social Media: Use the hashtag #NationalSmilePowerDay to spread positivity online.

The Science Behind Smiling

Smiling can have several benefits:

  • Mood Enhancement: Activates the release of neurotransmitters that improve mood.

  • Stress Reduction: Lowers heart rate and blood pressure.

  • Social Connection: Fosters trust and approachability in social interactions.

  • Immune Support: May strengthen the immune system by reducing stress-induced hormones.

Whether through a simple grin or a hearty laugh, Smile Power Day serves as a reminder of the profound impact a smile can have on our lives and the lives of others.

World Emoji Day

World Emoji Day is celebrated annually on July 17th to honour the impact of emojis on digital communication and to highlight their role in modern expression.

📅 Why July 17th?

The date was chosen because July 17th is the date displayed on the 📅 calendar emoji on Apple devices. This design choice references the launch of Apple's iCal calendar application on July 17th, 2002. Recognising this, Jeremy Burge, the founder of Emojipedia, established World Emoji Day in 2014 to celebrate emojis and their influence on communication.

🎉 How Is It Celebrated?

World Emoji Day has grown into a global event featuring:

  • Emoji Announcements: Companies like Apple and Google often unveil new emojis or updates to existing ones.

  • World Emoji Awards: Organised by Emojipedia, these awards recognise popular and anticipated emojis each year.

  • Cultural Events: Institutions like the British Library have hosted discussions on the evolution and significance of emojis.

  • Public Celebrations: Landmarks such as the Empire State Building have been illuminated in "emoji yellow" to mark the occasion.

🌍 The Significance of Emojis

Emojis have transformed the way people communicate, adding emotional nuance and clarity to digital conversations. They serve as a universal language, bridging gaps across cultures and languages, and continue to evolve to represent diverse experiences and identities.
