About ‘World Music Day’

World Music Day, also known as Fête de la Musique, is an annual celebration held on 21st June, promoting music in all its forms and encouraging people to enjoy and perform music freely in public spaces.

🎵 What Is It?

• Origin: Started in France in 1982 by the French Ministry of Culture.

• Name: "Fête de la Musique" is a play on words in French, meaning both "Festival of Music" and "Make Music."

• Purpose: To make music accessible to everyone, regardless of age, background, or skill level.

🌍 How Is It Celebrated?

• Worldwide events in over 120 countries including the UK, USA, Germany, Italy, India, and more.

• Free performances: Musicians (both amateur and professional) are encouraged to perform for free in public spaces—parks, streets, schools, museums, and community centres.

• No genre limits: All types of music—classical, rock, jazz, folk, electronic—are celebrated.

• Community focus: The goal is connection, creativity, and cultural expression, not profit.

🎶 World Music Day in the UK

• Though not as widely recognised as in France, music schools, community groups, and arts organisations in the UK often mark the day with:

  • School music assemblies

  • Live community concerts

  • Online streaming performances

  • Workshops and participatory events

• Music is a universal language.

• Everyone can create and enjoy music.

• It's a day to celebrate cultural diversity and musical freedom.
