About ‘World Teachers’ Day’
World Teachers' Day, also known as International Teachers' Day, is celebrated annually on October 5th. It was established in 1994 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to recognise the pivotal role that teachers play in education and society.
Objectives of World Teachers' Day:
Appreciate Teachers' Contributions: The day honors teachers worldwide for their dedication and commitment to educating and shaping the future generation.
Raise Awareness of Teacher Challenges: It highlights the challenges that teachers face, such as inadequate pay, limited resources, overcrowded classrooms, and the need for better professional development and support.
Promote Quality Education: The day also focuses on the importance of providing quality education and ensuring that all children have access to well-trained, motivated, and supported teachers.
Celebrate Teaching as a Profession: World Teachers' Day underscores the significance of teaching as a profession and advocates for policies that support teachers in their critical work.
Each year, the day is marked by a global theme that focuses on different aspects of teaching, such as teacher shortages, the impact of technology in education, or the role of teachers in crisis situations. Schools, organisations, and governments organise events, campaigns, and awards to recognise outstanding teachers and raise awareness of the profession's importance.
