Core ‘Autumn’ Resources
PLANNING - Topic Plan Ideas - AUTUMN
This pack contains a wealth of activity ideas for the Autumn topic as well as some blank forms for you to note down your own ideas.
AUTUMN - Subitising Cards

AUTUMN - Subitising - Large Flash Cards (A4)
The children are to be encouraged to say how many conkers there are straight away with no counting. They are intended to be held up by an adult as part of a group or class activity.
Print and use the cards appropriate for your children. 22 cards within pack for subitising numbers 1-6. Blank card template at the end to make your own if required.
AUTUMN - Number Subitising Posters/Mats (1-6)
Autumn themed subitising posters which may also be used as mats. Each poster (1-6) displays the numeral on a central tree. Surrounding the tree are sycamore seeds, conkers, a hedgehog with dots and a dice which each subitise the number in different ways. In the top left corner we have also featured an autumn leaf with the number written in word form.
AUTUMN - Leaf Display
These leaves can be used by the children to draw and/or write on with the goal of creating a group display.
For example, a kindness display could be created by the children drawing/writing on their leaves about kind things others have done for them, or that they have done for others.
The cutting out of the leaves also helps as fine motor practice.
AUTUMN - Hedgehog Subitising (1-3) (Free)
This hedgehog subitising (subitizing) game encourages children to spot the hedgehogs with the appropriate number of dots (in different formations). ‘How quickly can we match all of the hedgehogs to the correct piles of cosy leaves?’
You may want to add an element of challenge with a timer, e.g. ‘Can we get all of the hedgehogs to their safe hiding spots before the timer runs out?’ (We would advise beginning without a timer and then only adding this element to progress the game once children are becoming confident. Start with a time which is definitely achievable.)
Choose the appropriate pack for your child(ren): Subitising to 3, 5 or 10. Other 2 packs available here.
AUTUMN WORD MAT
‘Autumn’ word mat. Why not use in conjunction with our ‘Autumn’ word cards? Can be used as part of a display or activities. Uses vary from pointing activities with younger children (e.g. ‘Where’s the fox?’) and naming and describing objects in the world around us, right up to children beginning to read and write.
AUTUMN SOUND CARDS

These cards can be used to prompt a discussion about the sounds heard in autumn.
This discussion could be before, after or during an autumn walk!
16 cards included within pack.

The first sheet has suggested items included. The subsequent sheets are blank for the children to write or draw the item they are testing and then record the result.
AUTUMN MOVEMENT ACTIVITY CHALLENGE CARDS
Have great fun with your children whilst all acting out Autumn sights with this set of 8 Autumn Activity Challenge cards. Perhaps children could stand in a circle around the pile of cards and take turns to pick one for everyone to do. Cards could equally be shrunk down and placed on a key ring to take out on adventures or featured on an indoor or outdoor display board and referred to with everyone carrying out the activity on floor space in front. Once the children get to know the cards they will be able to relate the action to the picture without necessarily needing the card read to them...For example an adult may be able to simply hold up a card and everyone will be able to do the activity together! For those children who are exceptionally engaged, these cards explored in sequence could even be set to music as a dance performance! Great for physical development, descriptive language, understanding the world and turn taking.
SIGNS OF AUTUMN POSTERS
‘Signs of Autumn’ cards. Ideal for use as part of a Autumn display to visually highlight the changes that happen following Summer. Cards can also be used as a great stimulus for communication and language.
When used as part of a display or offered as part of an invitation to play children may initiate communication to you or other children about the cards in a child led fashion. Alternatively, adult led interaction could include closed or open ended questioning. Younger children may point to familiar objects when prompted e.g. ‘Where’s the squirrel?’ and learn new words as you describe to them what is in the picture. As children progress, more ground may be covered such as ‘What colours can you see?’, ‘How many leaves are there in this picture?’…
