MY SPRING SENSES POEM
These Spring Senses Poem mark making prompt sheets will help encourage your children to draw and/or write about their senses and start to get a feel for poetry…perhaps after the children have been on a Spring walk! Children can complete them at varying levels. For example, your youngest children may be able to tell you what they see or hear and you can scribe a single word in each box. Some children may like to make marks to represent what they sense and your more developed children may like to write the rest of the sentence thinking about describing words to build a picture in the reader’s mind. Please note, the words do not need to rhyme.

SIGNS OF SPRING - COLOURING
Signs of Spring’ colouring cards. As with the display full colour versions, these colouring cards are ideal to visually highlight the changes that happen following Winter. In conjunction with developing fine motor skills and expressive arts and design elements (e.g. the choice of colours), cards can also be used as a great stimulus for communication and language. When offered as part of an invitation to play children may initiate communication to you or other children about the cards in a child led fashion. Alternatively, adult led interaction could include closed or open ended questioning. Younger children may point to familiar objects when prompted e.g. ‘Where’s the tree?’ and learn new words as you describe to them what is in the picture. As children progress, more ground may be covered such as ‘What colours have you used?’, ‘How many ducklings are there in this picture?’, ‘Which is your favourite card?’, ‘Why do you like this picture the best?’, ‘Shall we draw blossom on this tree?’, ‘Have you seen any of these signs of Spring?’, ‘Where?’, ‘When?’, ‘Who were you with?’, ‘Shall we go outside and see which of them we can find?’ If children take their pictures home, further consolidation of new vocabulary and Spring facts may arise through additional communication with those at home.

SPRING MOVEMENT/ACTIVITY CHALLENGE CARDS
Have fun with this set of 8 Spring Activity Challenge cards. Perhaps children could stand in a circle around the pile of cards and take turns to pick one for everyone to do. Once the children get to know the cards they will be able to relate the action to the picture without necessarily needing the card read to them...For example an adult may be able to simply hold up a card and everyone will be able to do the activity together! Great for physical development, descriptive language, understanding the world and turn taking.

BUTTERFLY NUMBER SHEETS
These versatile butterfly number sheets could be used in a number of ways. Challenge your children to finger paint the right number of marks on each butterfly/wing. Alternatively, use as a playdough mat where the children might like to make the corresponding number of shapes to place on the wings, mould the number at the top or even the entire butterfly. The sheets could also be used in a similar way using loose parts or even collage materials whereby children may like to cut and stick various shapes that they create themselves. You may even like to provide children with basic shapes to place or stick onto the wings so that the children not only learn about numbers and 1:1 correspondence counting but also specific shapes you feel they are ready to begin recognising and describing. Equally, the sheets could simply be offered to children with colouring tools such as pencils, crayons or pens.
