What are ‘birds’?

(Description appropriate for 2-7 year olds)

Birds are amazing creatures that come in all shapes, sizes, and colours! They have feathers that keep them warm and help them fly high in the sky. Some birds can sing beautiful songs, while others are great at making their nests cosy with twigs and leaves. Did you know that some birds are super fast, like the tiny hummingbird, while others, like the majestic ostrich, can't fly at all? Birds lay eggs, and when the baby birds hatch, they need their parents to feed them until they can fly on their own! So next time you see a bird soaring above or hopping on the ground, think of all the fun things they can do!

World Sparrow Day

World Sparrow Day was created by the Nature Forever Society. As well as looking at all common birds in urban areas, it focuses on the sparrow’s conservation around the world. Children will enjoy looking into a bird that they may already be familiar with in their local area or from visits to parks.

National Nestbox Week

National Nestbox Week aims to encourage the placing of nestboxes in gardens to help small birds. As gardens get neater and tidier there are less places for birds to find natural homes. This week is a great excuse for some more bird-themed learning for the children and teaching them to think about the local wildlife around them.

Big Garden/Schools Birdwatch

This event was started by the RSPB. Its aims are to develop a greater appreciation of the birds around us and encourage people to note down the birds that visit them in their garden or school setting.

More information about the Big Schools’ Birdwatch can be found HERE and Big Garden Birdwatch HERE.

National Robin Day (UK)

National Robin Day is an annual nationwide event created by Songbird Survival raising awareness of small birds and other wildlife in winter and how you can help them through this tough time of year.

“Winter is a tough time for UK songbirds, as temperatures drop, and natural food supplies are limited. They're going to be focused on three key things to make sure they can get through the winter; Food, Water and Shelter.” (Source: www.songbird-survival.org.uk/campaign/national-robin-day)
