About ‘Mother’s Day’

Mother’s Day is a special day dedicated to honouring and appreciating mothers, mother figures, and maternal bonds. It is celebrated in many countries but on different dates worldwide.

Key Facts About Mother’s Day

  • Purpose: To show love, gratitude, and appreciation for mothers and maternal figures.

  • Date:

    • UK (Mothering Sunday) – The fourth Sunday of Lent (March or April, varies each year).

    • Most other countries (including the US, Canada, and Australia) – The second Sunday in May.

  • Origins:

    • The UK’s Mothering Sunday has Christian roots, historically a day when people visited their "mother church."

    • The modern version (especially in the US) was founded by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official holiday in 1914.

How is Mother’s Day Celebrated?

💐 Giving gifts – Flowers (especially carnations), chocolates, or handmade presents.
🍽️ Special meals – Breakfast in bed, afternoon tea, or dining out.
💌 Cards & messages – Expressing love and gratitude.
👩‍👧‍👦 Spending time together – Family outings or quality time at home.
🎭 Church services & traditions – Especially in the UK for Mothering Sunday.
