About ‘St. David’s Day’
St. David's Day (Dydd Gŵyl Dewi in Welsh) is the national day of Wales, celebrated annually on March 1st in honor of St. David (Dewi Sant), the patron saint of Wales. St. David was a Welsh bishop who lived in the 6th century and is credited with spreading Christianity throughout Wales. According to legend, he performed miracles, including making the ground rise beneath him while preaching.
The day is marked by parades, concerts, and celebrations across Wales. People often wear daffodils or leeks, both symbols of Welsh identity. Traditional foods like cawl (a Welsh soup), Welsh cakes, and bara brith (a fruit loaf) are enjoyed.
