World Bicycle Day

World Bicycle Day is celebrated annually on 3rd June. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018, this day recognises the bicycle as a simple, affordable, clean, and environmentally sustainable means of transportation. It highlights the role of cycling in promoting health, reducing carbon emissions, and fostering sustainable development.

Significance of World Bicycle Day

The UN emphasises that bicycles contribute to cleaner air, less congestion, and make education, health care, and other social services more accessible to the most vulnerable populations. Cycling also promotes tolerance, mutual understanding, and a culture of peace.

Celebrations in the UK

In the UK, World Bicycle Day is observed through various activities:

  • Community Rides: Local cycling groups and organisations often organise group rides to promote cycling and community engagement.

  • Educational Events: Schools and community centres may host workshops and events to educate people about the benefits of cycling and road safety.

  • Advocacy Campaigns: Cycling advocacy groups use the day to campaign for better cycling infrastructure and policies.

Upcoming Related Events

Following World Bicycle Day, Bike Week 2025 will take place from 9th–15th June. Organised by Cycling UK, Bike Week is the UK's biggest celebration of cycling, encouraging people of all ages to experience the benefits of cycling. Cycling UK

National Walking Month

National Walking Month is an effort to get everyone walking as much as possible.

According to Living Streets: “Walking is an easy and accessible way to improve physical and mental health and a 20-minute walk can reduce the risk of a number of preventable health conditions, including certain cancers, depression, heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. By swapping a short drive for a short walk, you can also help reduce air pollution, congestion and road danger - whilst saving yourself some money and getting active in the process!” www.livingstreets.org.uk/get-involved/campaign-with-us/national-walking-month

When working with young children it can be an opportunity to develop an understanding of the benefits of an active lifestyle.

Walk to School Week

Walk to School Week is a part of National Walking Month. For the whole week, students and school workers are challenged to walk to school as much as possible.

It is another chance to develop an understanding of the benefits of an active lifestyle.

Big Walk and Wheel

Big Walk and Wheel is organised by the charity Sustrans. The event endeavours to ‘inspire pupils, staff and parents to be amazing and take active journeys... cycling, walking, wheeling or scooting to school’

Whether travelling to school or elsewhere, in early years we can help encourage the children to lead active lives.
