About ‘Passover’
Passover (Pesach) is a major Jewish holiday that commemorates the Israelites' liberation from slavery in ancient Egypt, as described in the Book of Exodus. It is observed for seven days in Israel and eight days in many Jewish communities outside of Israel, beginning on the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Nisan (typically in March or April).
Key Aspects of Passover:
The Exodus Story: The holiday remembers how God, through Moses, led the Israelites out of Egypt after a series of ten plagues were inflicted upon the Egyptians.
The Seder: A ritual meal held on the first (and sometimes second) night, featuring symbolic foods, storytelling, prayers, and songs.
Matzah (Unleavened Bread): Since the Israelites left Egypt in haste and didn't have time for their bread to rise, Jews eat matzah instead of leavened bread during Passover.
Avoidance of Chametz: Leavened foods (chametz), such as bread and pasta, are prohibited.
The Four Questions: Traditionally asked by the youngest person at the Seder, these questions help explain the significance of the holiday.
Songs and Traditions: Popular songs like "Dayenu" express gratitude for God's blessings.
Passover is a time of reflection on freedom, faith, and resilience, and it remains one of the most widely observed Jewish holidays.
